Yes! At minimum, I like to take a handful of posed photos to make sure we get everyone in the same frame and looking at the camera—just for good measure. These often become the Christmas card photo, a new profile picture, or the one that gets framed for the mantel. They aren’t the focus of the session, but I’m always happy to make time for them while we’re together.

I put a lot of care into getting to know your family before the session even begins. I’ll ask questions about each person’s personality, their comfort level in front of the camera, what they’re interested in right now. What makes the shy child feel comfortable? What will get the energetic one excited to participate? What little interests or quirks feel especially true to them in this season?

When I arrive, I don’t immediately pull out my camera. I spend some time talking, getting to know everyone, and letting the kids warm up to my presence. I might ask them to show me a favorite toy or something they’ve been working on. By the time I begin photographing, I’m not quite such a stranger—and everyone has had time to ease into having me there.

I get it! Traditional family portraits can mean hours spent getting everyone dressed in their Sunday best, perfectly combing hair, and trying to leave the house on time—only for the baby to have a blowout, the kids to get cranky, and everyone to arrive late and sweaty.

Before your session, I’ll ask questions that help me understand the natural rhythm of your family’s day. When are naps and meals? When are your children usually happiest? What tends to be the hardest part of the day? Together, we’ll make a plan that works with your family rather than against it.

Once I’m there, we go with the flow. Mismatched outfits, a messy house, or a crying baby won’t ruin anything. I’m a Mom of young children—I live this, too. Your family doesn’t need to be perfect for me. My job is to recognize and preserve the beauty already present, even in the chaos.

Again, I’m a Mom—nothing is going to shock me! I’ll follow Mom and Dad’s lead. If everyone needs a little break, I can step away or run out for coffee while your family resets. Or I can take a few steps back and document the full range of family life—the big feelings, the comforting cuddles, and everyone finding their way back to the fun.

We’ll go with the flow. There’s no pressure to force a happy moment when your child is having a hard one.

Nope! My Catholic faith shapes the way I see family life, but it doesn’t determine who I photograph. I approach every family looking for the good, the true, and the beautiful already present within their story.
